Locate the battery's hatch and make sure that it is set to "open." Use a flathead screwdriver, coin or a similar tool to open the hatch off. Next, carefully pry the battery from its socket by lifting it on the side closest to the key-ring loop. Wear rubber gloves to shield the clips and electronic contact surfaces.

After the battery is removed, insert the new one into its socket. Make sure that the positive side is facing upwards and that it's seated in all of the clips. Slide the cover toward the key-ring portion until it loosens and falls off. Then, lift the cover to reveal the mechanical key blade inside. This can be used to unlock your vehicle from the driver's side door when the battery of your key fob is dead or lost.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles are usually equipped with key fobs that perform much more than just unlock or lock the doors. They can also be used for other useful functions like summoning and auto-parking the vehicle. The brand new Volvo XC60 is capable of remotely starting your engine by using the key fob buttons. How does it work exactly?

First, find a clean, flat surface where you can lay out all the required items needed for this project. Lay the fob on the surface with the Volvo logo facing up. The battery can be replaced with a flathead screwdriver, pry bar made of plastic, or other small tools. Locate the small slot that houses the backup or emergency key for ignition made of metal. Insert the blade of your screwdriver or pry bar tool into this slot and gently pry open the back of the fob that holds the key. Once the fob is opened you can locate the CR2032 3V battery and remove it. Put a brand new battery in its place, and put the fob back together.

Note: Some older Volvos have a different battery one called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have a thickness of 7 tenths one millimeter less than CR2032 which means you'll need to be very careful when replacing your battery.
