WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades can give you boost in specific statistics. Each upgrade increases the level of the item by +3. A random extra substat is also added to each upgrade.

The upgraded gear typically has a higher trade value regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or very high stat variance (like Eth titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the need to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be used to create Enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear at any time by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader once every few weeks, to keep your equipment up to date.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the level of the item however, they are always cheaper than purchasing new gear. For example upgrading a Benthic chest piece to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points while purchasing the same item from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade weapon, armor, tool, and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased from item upgraders NPCs for a variety of currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next upgrade level if there are enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the slot of the item level upgrade, click, and the current item upgrader kit level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for example. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Some upgrades give a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Upgraders for items are available at many locations, including the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs offer an upgrade coupon and a possibility of obtaining an entirely new recipe. The discount for upgrades increases depending on the amount of items that are being upgraded, and can be boosted by having players complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II is no item upgrader available at the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead, the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades must be acquired through a variety of means which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was tweaked a bit, with several new features added. After a player has earned an upgrade to a certain level for an item in an armor slot, upgrading other items to that level will cost less, even in the event that they belong to another set of gear.

The discount applies to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is reduced also, but is only available once certain milestones are achieved.

Crests

Players have several options when it comes to upgrading their gear in WoW. Flightstones are a currency that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specialized, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.

First, you must be aware that Crests are only available to equipment that is of a certain rank. Each rank comes with distinct upgrade paths. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complex upgrade requires up to 20 crests, based on the type or gear that is being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by completing content of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities for lower-tier gear, dungeons or raids of all difficulty for items of higher tier, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons to obtain endgame gear. The crests can later be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

Utilizing these new currencies isn't too difficult, but the system does introduce some changes to the overall upgrade process. For example, once an item is at the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This allows players to upgrade their gear to the highest possible level on all of their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

Another significant change is that crests have one purpose, so it's important to use them properly. For instance, it's a good idea use all of your Whelpling-rank crests with the Best item upgrader equipment available and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you're planning on making. This is particularly true for items like rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character, which will only be able to benefit from the account-wide discount if all slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
