How to Replace an audi keyfob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Kia-Motors-New-2021.pngIn this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated Near By the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

    1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions however the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

    2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

    3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

    4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter replacement key for audi a3 the gearbox, a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in the gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly if they're an Bosch model like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is a good option.

    5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues with your vehicle. It is a crucial part of your audi a3 key fob's transmission, since it relays information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car key replacement audi to be affected.

Peugeot-2021-New-Black.pngThe G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate fuel, timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. There should be an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these points. This is a common part that is found across the audi spare keys 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best parts could be found in wrecking yards.
